Art Lab on the Lawn, the creative and casual monthly art studio pop-up, which was set to host its final session this Sunday, October 26, is extending through February and cozying up indoors to Hotel Moraine’s cottage by the sea.
The collaboration by Artfully Long Island, Petite North Fork, and Hotel Moraine has been a success over the past seven months, with monthly open studio sessions inviting children and people of all ages to create one-of-a-kind art using recycled and upcycled materials.
“Watching so many young artists freely explore materials, create amazing pieces of art, and engage in inspiring conversations with each other and their families has been truly joyful,” shared Nicole Roccaro, Founder of Artfully Long Island. “It’s this spirit of creativity, connection, and community that has made Art Lab on the Lawn such a tremendous success.”
Changes as Art Lab moves indoors
Beginning in November and extending monthly through February, Art Lab on the Lawn will officially move indoors into the cottage at Hotel Moraine, where Art Lab on the Lawn housed materials previously. However, while we will be providing enough space to work indoors, if you prefer to be outside, you are more than welcome to come dressed for the weather and sit on the deck or the lawn. Additional Art Lab dates include: 11/16, 12/28, 1/18, and 2/8.
To continue offering Art Lab to as many artists as possible, we will be dividing each session into two one-hour time slots, with the first running from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the second from noon to 1 p.m. — each will be capped at 15 artists. On the registration form, you may select which timeslot you would like to attend. All spots are on a first-come, first-served basis, and you will be notified if your preferred time slot is full. Also, with a limited space, we are asking that only one adult per child attend Art Lab.
“Over the winter months, we'll continue with our open-studio approach, where participants can follow our gentle, open-ended suggestions or choose to move about from station to station, but with the smaller group size and less space to spread out, you will see two smaller stations or one bigger station,” added Nicole. “And, to ensure that all participants have the freedom to move around comfortably, gather materials as needed, and have plenty of room to create, we're introducing a maximum number of artists per session during the winter months. This will help us maintain a positive, productive environment.”
The excitement builds
While Art Lab on the Lawn was initially designed as the perfect warm-weather thing to do with the whole crew, expanding this unique art studio pop-up through winter couldn’t make us more excited.
“We are excited to extend Art Lab through the winter for both our community and our guests,” said Rachel Flatley, General Manager of Hotel Moraine. “Offering a fun activity for both adults and children is a win! The cottage offers stunning views of the Sound, so it feels like an escape when you’re otherwise cooped up inside during the winter.”
“It’s been fascinating to see how the changing weather has already influenced the little artists’ approach, engagement, and creativity from spring to fall, and I can’t wait to see what the next season brings,” added Nicole.
Hotel Moraine is located at 62005 County Rt. 48 in Greenport. The hotel and grounds are open through February for guests and the local community for coffee and drinks daily. They also offer Happy Hour every Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring live music and drink specials.
