Steal My North Fork Itinerary for March

Celebrating East End student artwork at the Parrish Art Museum’s Student Exhibition Preview Day (Photo: Petite North Fork)

IDK about you and your petite crew, but ours is officially, totally emotionally over winter. Like hibernate-in-our-beds-until-spring over winter. But if earlier this week taught us anything at all, it's that we do so much better outside and out and about than cooped up inside our home. So, for March, we’ll brave what’s left of the snow and head out for a month full of fun, nature, and new seasons. Read on for the full list of 10 things we're looking forward to doing this March on the North Fork and nearby.

Viewing East End student-made art at the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton

Every year, our crew heads to the Parrish Art Museum for the Student Exhibition Preview Day, where we check out artwork from East End student artists. This year, in addition to the gallery preview, the day will include a drumming circle drop-in, imagination play project workshops, and the Southampton String Ensemble. The preview day is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes free admission, refreshments, and live music. Check out the complete details of the day here. Student art will be on display through April 26.

Maple sugaring at the Suffolk County Farm & Education Center, Yaphank

This is something that I’ve always wanted to learn but never had the opportunity to until now! On Saturday, March 7, at 10 a.m., the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center is hosting a Maple Sugaring day where attendees will learn the process of making syrup by helping drill and tap the farm’s maple trees and hanging buckets to collect the sap. There will also be a maple sugaring process presentation to learn how to turn the sap into syrup. Then, enjoy a wagon ride to visit the farm’s animals. The cost is $15/person for ages 3+ when registering in advance. $20/person the day of the event. Register now

Watching Mattituck H.S. Musical Theatre Company perform The Addams Family, Mattituck

We recently watched The Addams Family movie, and my kids both loved it, so I was excited to see that the Mattituck High School Musical Theatre Company is putting on a school edition production of the comedy. You can catch the musical on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $10/adult, $5/student, and will be available at the door. The show will be hosted in the Mattituck High School Auditorium.

Playing a March Madness game of characters at the Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library, Cutchogue

This new, super cute event hosted by the Cutchogue New Suffolk Library was inspired by the NCAA March Madness tournament. In this version of March Madness, popular children’s book characters will go head-to-head in a bracket-style competition. Kids are invited to visit the library beginning on Sunday, March 8, then weekly, to vote for their favorite characters and see who moves on to the next round. All are welcome and invited to participate in this fun competition. More details here

Learning how to make a needle-felted bunny at Hallockville Museum Farm, Riverhead

If you didn’t know that we’re bunny-obsessed over here, well, now you do! When I saw Hallockville Museum Farm’s upcoming needle-felting workshop, where crafters will celebrate the coming of spring by sculpting wool into a needle-felted bunny, I knew I had to attend — even better, when I learned that this workshop is also open to tweens and teens. The needlefelting session will be held on Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to noon, and costs $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Additionally, there is also a $25 supplies kit fee. Keep checking here for updated info.

Hanging with the Easter Bunny at Riverhead Cider House, Baiting Hollow

While we’re not quite thinking about egg hunts (don’t worry, a post will be coming soon to petitenorthfork.com with all of the North Fork egg hunts), it’s hard to say no to a hang with the Easter Bunny at Riverhead Ciderhouse. On Sunday, March 22, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., we’ll be celebrating spring with fun for the whole family. There will be live music, food, drinks, and photos with the Easter Bunny. No RSVP is required.

Building a mason bee habitat with Group for the East End, Cutchogue

Even if there’s still snow on the ground (ugh), we’ll be thinking spring at this hands-on workshop. On Sunday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, we’re headed to Downs Farm Preserve for Group for the East End’s mason bee habitat building event. There, we’ll be using reeds and recycled tin cans to create a home for tunnel-nesting pollinators. The cost for this event is $10/person. Registration is required. This event will be hosted indoors.

We’re headed to the South Fork for this springy workshop! On Saturday, March 28, at 11 a.m., the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center is hosting a pollinator garden planting event. There, we’ll plant native wildflower seeds and learn about ways to help our gardens flourish with native plantings. This family-friendly event is best for adults and children ages 5+.
