A day of hands-on, family-friendly fun is fast approaching, and you won’t want to miss it. On Saturday, March 28, Peconic Community School will open its doors to the public and local community as they host their 7th Annual Maker Fair

Attendees of all ages are invited to dive into a festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness with plentiful performances, interactive demonstrations, hands-on crafts, and nearly 30 makers of every kind, from knitters and artists to astronomers and sculptors.

“Crocheters will be offering demos and lessons in beginner crochet; a potter will have a wheel going for attendees to throw pots; a driftwood artist will help attendees fashion trees from driftwood; Citizen Science Learning Center will be offering demos using GIS mapping technology; Mary Jo Allegra will have a handmade, cardboard portrait making machine; a hat maker will help attendees decorate their own hats; Artfully Long Island will have loose parts on hand for curious young ones to play with; the Artist’s Nest will have a wilderness traveling museum with nature artifacts, crafts and instruments for attendees to interact with, VEME Studio will be on hand with an art activity for kids, a plant expert will demonstrate the Japanese art of Kokedama, and so much more,” shared PCS Director of Communications and Documentation Megan Eilers.

The jam-packed event will also feature a full lineup of performers, including local drummer Christina Sun, who will host a drum circle and/or set up a percussion tent, a puppet show by Think Big Puppets will put on a puppet, a STEAM-based magic show by John Reid, and the now-famous PCS student-built cardboard arcade.

“Part science fair, part county fair, and part something else entirely, the PCS Maker Fair is a one-of-a-kind chance for kids of all ages to gather with local artisans, craftspeople, scientists, and inventors and learn more about the many types of ‘Making' that fuel passions throughout our community,” added Megan.

Hands-on learning and making is a theme woven throughout PCS’s curriculum, and the Maker Fair is a special day where the outside community is invited to experience it.

Megan told us, “Continuing our tradition of highlighting how important making and hands-on learning is for attendees of all ages, we want to help build community around the idea of hands-on learning, especially this year in our newly acquired permanent home.”

Doors to the Maker Fair will open at 10 a.m., and the event will end at 2 p.m. A $15 per-family admission donation is suggested. And don’t worry about rushing out for lunch, Boxcar Burgers will be on-site, to power hungry makers and attendees.

Also during the Maker Fair, co-director Liz Casey Searl will offer guided tours of the PCS campus and classrooms.
