Calling all kids! Trade your clothes and build community in a kids’ clothing swap event you won’t want to miss

“An event that promotes true community, a celebration of giving and sustainability,” is what Stephanie Visek of Ohhh Its A Vibe says of her upcoming Kids’ Clothing Swap scheduled for Friday, Oct. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Gardens at Beds & Borders in Laurel.

During this free event, kids of all ages, along with their families, are invited to bring three to 10 pieces of gently used or new items that they would like to swap for an equal number of items donated by other children.

Gently used clothing in sizes toddler 2T to size 12 or children’s XL, shoes, accessories, and books may be brought to swap. Clothing that is not swapped during the event will be collected and donated to local non-profits to support families in need.

This free event, which is planned for outdoors in a beautiful garden area, but will move indoors into a greenhouse if needed, is easy to participate in and navigate.

“When you arrive, sign in, and then your child will add the pieces they brought to the displays — there will be tables and clothing racks organized by category: pants, tops, dresses, jackets, and more. From there, your child gets to go shopping for the same number of pieces they brought,” shared Stephanie. “During this process, your kids will most likely spark up conversation with other kids, find joy in someone eyeing a piece they brought, and get lit up by pieces that catch their eye!”

Stephanie, who was inspired by a clothing swap in February, decided to host her own late this summer. There, she had three kids attend with their parents, but no other kids brought children’s items to swap, so she promised she would host an event just for kids.

“We’re showing them a different way things get done,” Stephanie shared. “We don’t just have to dream of community spaces where we can refresh our wardrobe for free; we get to create them. This event is showing these kids what is possible in the land of community and sustainability. This event is an opportunity to teach about the life cycle of a piece of clothing, or an invitation to be more conscious of what we buy, or a practice space for giving to others.”

The Kids’ Clothing Swap is free and open to all. Registration is suggested and can be done here. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the event. Contact Stephanie at ohh.its.a.vibe@gmail.com with any questions.
