Three tall ships will dock in Greenport this summer — here’s everything you’ll want to know from deck tours to sails.
Few things are equally enjoyable for adults and children alike. Stepping aboard a tall ship is undoubtedly one of them. This summer, three tall ships are set to visit Greenport: Kalmar Nyckel “The Tall Ship of Delaware,” USCGC Eagle “America’s Tall Ship,” and Pride of Baltimore II, inviting the public aboard for deck tours and more.
Kalmar Nyckel, a full-scale sailing vessel replica of the 1638 ship that established the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, will visit Greenport with a schedule set for Monday, July 20 through Sunday, July 26, offering options for daysails and deck tours. Day and evening sails will be offered Monday through Sunday, except for Tuesday. Daysails feature 2.5 hours of adventure, fun, and history, recommended for ages 8 and above. There, you’ll help to raise the sails, watch the crew use the traditional whipstaff, and take in the views of Greenport from the bay. Tickets cost $85/adult and $50 for children 12 and under. Daysails sell out quickly, so secure your tickets now. If a daysail is not your speed, visit Kalmar Nyckel on Saturday, July 25 from 2 to 7 p.m., for free deck tours.
On Friday, August 7 through Monday, August 10, United States Coast Guard Academy’s Eagle “America’s Tall Ship” will dock in Greenport and offer deck tours to the public. There, you’re invited to meet the crew and experience the Coast Guard’s only active square-rigged sailing vessel, walk the decks, gaze at the vast sails and rigging, and explore historic spaces and the galley. Known as “America’s Tall Ship,” Eagle offers future officers the opportunity to put into practice the navigation, engineering, and professional theory they learned in the classroom. A permanent crew of eight officers and 50 enlisted personnel maintain the ship year-round. Check the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Facebook page for up-to-date info on deck tour times and schedule.
The Pride of Baltimore IIwill visit Greenport on Friday, August 28 through Monday, August 31, as it takes part in the nationwide Sail250 commemoration, sailing along the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Coast as part of this historic milestone. Deck tours will invite people of all ages to explore the deck and talk to the captain and crew. Tourgoers will learn about the history of Baltimore Clippers and Pride II. Visit Pride of Baltimore II’s website for up-to-date info on deck tour times and schedule.
