Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! A musical production of The Wizard of Oz is coming to the North Fork Community Theatre

If your petite crew is still all-things-Oz obsessed, you’re not alone. We’re still putting on near-daily car productions of “Defying Gravity.” Lucky for us all, we don’t have to travel far to share the original story a catch a production of The Wizard of Oz.

Beginning on May 15 and running through June 1, the North Fork Community Theatre (NFCT) in Mattituck will perform its own musical version of the beloved classic. Shows are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

Mary Motto Kalish, who has directed, produced, acted in, and been a part of the crew for dozens of North Fork Community Theater shows since she was a teenager, is directing this production of The Wizard of Oz. We spoke with her for the inside scoop on what to expect from the NFCT version of The Wizard of Oz.

Q: How closely will NFCT's show follow the original movie?

Mary: The NFCT’s show is very similar to the original movie, with a few extra scenes. Audiences will recognize the classic story as they see Dorothy follow the Yellow Brick Road to Oz.

Q: Are there any fun surprises to look for?

Mary: The Witch Melts! But that is probably not a surprise. Audience members will be delighted by designer Robert Taylor’s special effects.

There is also an “Honorary Ozian” pre-show reception starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, where audience members can “Walk the Green Carpet” to Oz, have some treats, and get to see the Wizard of Oz-themed artwork created by local artists.

Q: What ages is this show most appropriate for?

Mary: The Wizard of Oz is appropriate for all ages, with the caveat that two Evil Witches die – one by a house falling on them, and another by a bucket of water.

Q: What can you share about the actors in this upcoming production?

Mary: Over 30 actors, with another 30 crew members, have all volunteered their time to put on this show. They are as young as 8, with the kids playing the munchkins, teenagers as featured dancers, and adults as the main characters.

Q: Why should Petite readers want to see this show?

Mary: The Wizard of Oz is a classic because it makes us all think of our own family and friends who we care about, and how, although we may make new friends and have adventures, we are so happy to come back to them.  It is also fun here, the beautiful and well-known songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Q: Why should Petite readers support NFCT?

Mary: The NFCT is an all-volunteer non-profit that provides opportunities for folks on the East End to both see and participate in live theatre. There are countless ways to get involved. No matter whether you are in the audience for a show or two a year, helping paint sets, or ushering, it is a great way to contribute.

The Wizard of Oz at North Fork Community Theatre will run approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission. Concessions will be sold before the show and during intermission. Tickets cost $30 per person, not including fees. View the complete schedule and purchase tickets here.
